Back to School Savings: Energy Edition.
Keep your cool and save some money when your kids go back to school.
School supply runs and carpool schedules signal the beginning of back-to-school season and the end of summer. However, hot temperatures are here to stay in many regions. Creating a comfortable environment when driving your kids to or from school, sports practice or after-school clubs will ensure a pleasant ride for everyone. Here are some tips to cool your car’s interior without spending more money than you need to.
1. Reduce parking lot idling
Turning on the air conditioning when it’s very hot outside can decrease your car’s fuel economy by more than 25 percent. Blasting the A/C as the car sits in the parking lot wastes even more fuel. Lessen your carbon footprint and save money in one shot. Step out of your car or turn off your car and roll down the windows. Either way, you’ll be able to enjoy some fresh air.
2. Implement pre-trip cool down methods
Park in the shade or use a sunshade to avoid overheating your car. Once you’re in the car, take a few minutes to drive with the windows open. This will expel hot air from the car and help your car cool down faster before turning on the A/C.
3. Use the A/C efficiently
Because the A/C can lower a car’s fuel economy, it’s important to know how to use your car’s A/C efficiently. When driving at lower speeds around town, roll down the windows in lieu of A/C. However, open windows increase wind resistance, so this becomes an inefficient cool-down technique when driving on the highway. When driving at high speeds, turn on the A/C at a temperature that creates a comfortable interior.
· Turn off your car when waiting for pick-up.
· Park in the shade to shorten the pre-trip cool down period.
· Depending on your speed, roll down the windows or use your car’s A/C to keep cool.
